Job Opportunity: Project Officer – Kitui Climate Change Project
Location: Muangeni Rural Development Programme, Kitui County
Project Duration: February 2026 – January 2027

Contract Type: Fixed-term (12 months)
Job Summary
The Project Officer will lead the implementation of the Kitui Climate Change Project, ensuring delivery of activities focused on climate resilience, biodiversity protection, and community empowerment. The role involves coordinating restoration activities within the project target area, community capacity building, school-based climate actions, and strengthening local climate governance structures. The officer will also support monitoring, stakeholder engagement, and knowledge sharing to advance climate adaptation and mitigation goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate awareness creation and training on climate adaptation and mitigation for target communities.
- Strengthen Ward Climate Change Planning Committees (WCCPC) to function within the County Climate Change Fund structure.
- Promote school-based climate actions including sensitization, tree growing, and monitoring.
- Support youth and women groups to register nurseries with Kenya Forest Service and improve infrastructure.
- Oversee establishment of demonstration sites for climate resilient ventures.
- Promote clean energy adoption.
- Strengthen county and sub-county climate change hubs for oversight and action.
- Organize stakeholder meetings and joint advocacy campaigns for climate policy implementation.
- Ensure compliance with environmental safeguards, donor requirements, and organizational standards throughout the project lifecycle.
- Contribute to knowledge management by documenting lessons learned, success stories, and best practices for replication and scale-up.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Climate Change, Environmental Science, Climate Change and Sustainable Development, Natural Resource Management, Agroforestry, or related fields.
- Experience: Minimum 2 years in NGO sector with demonstrable experience in climate change adaptation and mitigation, climate smart Agriculture and sustainable farming, Nature-based solutions, community-based natural resource management, biodiversity conservation and clean energy promotion.
- Knowledge: Familiarity with Kenya’s Climate Change Act (Amended) 2023, NCCAP 2023–2027, and FLLoCA program.
- Skills: Strong facilitation, networking, and digital proficiency (Office 365, M&E tools).
- An understanding of the Local context and language is an added advantage.
